ARLINGTON, Texas – The Arlington Independent School District will vote this week on a proposed measure to include Cesar Chavez’s birthday in the list of school holidays.

If approved, the holiday would replace an existing holiday around Cinco de Mayo on the school calendar. Arlington would become the first district in North Texas to have a Chavez holiday.

The idea reportedly came from a committee of students, parents and teachers.

"The committee voted that this is something they wanted to do, because we wanted to honor someone of Hispanic descent for their leadership and have a holiday in their honor," said Assistant Superintendent Jimmy Walker.

The district estimates 39 percent of its students are Hispanic, it’s largest ethnic group.

The board of trustees will vote on the issue on Thursday.
