Coal Train Derails in Cleburne
CLEBURNE, Texas – A 44-car train derailed in Cleburne on Friday morning, creating an enormous mess of twisted metal and spilled coal.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train went off the tracks at about 5:15, according to company representative Ron Jackson.
Jackson said the train, which was traveling from Wyoming to Houston, was carrying about 100 tons of coal and moving at about 45 mph when the accident happened.
He said it was not immediately known why the train derailed.
Two engineers were onboard but neither suffered serious injuries, he said.
The crash sparked a massive clean-up effort that Jackson said would not be completed on Friday.
The track is shared between freight trains and Amtrak , according to Thompson. Amtrak service was reportedly being rerouted.
