Launched on Independence Day, Viewers with Voices declared their
independence from the old “business as usual” way of calculating
television ratings with the slogan The ear of the leader must ring with the voice of the people-Woodrow Wilson
Co-partnering
with ViewersMatter.com, ViewerswithVoices.com is about making the
consumers voices heard.  ViewerswithVoices.com hopes to bring about a
ratings revolution by suggesting bringing in the cable and satellite
companies via their electronic devices (DVRs, Cable Boxes, Tivos, ect.)
and having them send numbers from their systems anonymously. In
addition, they are suggesting factoring in, online streaming and
downloads from iTunes and Amazon Unbox.

The Nielsen Ratings
System is a statistical sampling of people who are chosen to make your
television viewing decisions. From 1937 to present day, this has been
the lynchpin of the television universe, for both network stations an
advertisers. Their current way of calculating ratings may have worked
back in the late 1940s and 1950s when there were only 3 channels and a
significantly lower population, however people today don’t think
sampling 25,000 Nielsen families that report daily is enough to
represent the more than 250,000,000 current television viewers.

A
website can count every time a person visits the site. A turnstile at
the subway can count every single person who enters or leaves the
subway system. A man with a hand-click-counter can count every egg that
is laid by a chicken.
The Nielsen Ratings only counts what ONE in
every 10,000 Americans is watching on television at any given moment.
(That is assuming that every single one of those 25,000 people is
accurately and religiously using their “little black box”.)  That is
only .01% of the population. The other 1.5 million monitored on paper
diaries can’t get word back in enough time to make the numbers count.
More and more people are commenting “Advertisers
want my money. Networks want my eyes. The reality is though…..I don’t
matter!! I have no say in what is broadcast on network television, and
most likely neither do you
.”

According to their own website,
the Nielsen Ratings System is going to change with the coming
technology. ViewerswithVoices.com welcomes an open dialogue between the
ultimate consumer, the viewers, and the system that is known as the
“gospel” of tv ratings.

Hopefully in the near future, people will stop saying “I have a television, why don’t I matter!” and start saying, “ I have a television and what I watch does matter”.

So if you have any questions about this please let me know here.
We are working hard to get the old system out and some type of new system in to make sure all of us are counted.
More on this coming soon!
