English 1301 Dr. Litton’s Top Ten Greatest Myths and Misconceptions about Grammar and Usage
#10 You can never use "I" in formal writing. (How could people ever write autobiographies?) #9 You can’t begin a sentence with “but”, “because,” or some other words…I’m not exactly sure which ones, but just don’t, damm it! #8 In order to be a successful writer, you need to know every grammatical term and concept. If you do not know what the pluperfect tense is, you have a defective education because all the rest of the kids in school understand all of that stuff perfectly, and you’re just a bad person. (The Catholic guilt fallacy.) #7 The only reason you don’t know all these grammatical terms is because you’re a lazy person who doesn’t work hard enough. (The Protestant work ethic fallacy.) #6 Grammar and Usage remain fixed throughout time and their rules must not change. #5 Grammar is something that can only be acquired through years of diligent study in school. #4 There is only one “proper” form of English. And you should use it at all times, whether at home, at school, at work, or on formal occasions. (The “live like you’re Laurence Olivier” fallacy.) #3 There is no difference between grammar and usage. #2 Grammar was created by God in order to sort out the Good from the Wicked. Those who misuse the language will burn in hell. (The Churchlady fallacy.) #1 The formal study of grammar helps improve writing. “not” (check the petrovsky study of 1917.)
